Yet in many states\, taxpayer-funded agencies can refuse to work with LGBTQ+ parents and others\, citing religious beliefs. \nThis legislation would “prohibit discrimination on the basis of religion\, sex (including sexual orientation and gender identity)\, and marital status in the administration and provision of child welfare services\,” helping ensure that all qualified families can provide safe\, loving homes. It also raises a fundamental constitutional question: can federally funded systems be used to privilege one religious view of family while excluding others? \nAs noted in a press release from Kirsten Gillibrand\, the bill would prohibit discrimination by federally funded child welfare agencies and improve outcomes for LGBTQ+ youth\, including establishing a National Resource Center and banning harmful practices like conversion therapy. \nWe’ll connect the dots between this legislation and the broader rise of Christian Nationalist-driven policies that seek to redefine “religious liberty” as a license to discriminate. Then we’ll break down what’s at stake for children\, families\, and church–state separation—and help you take action by calling your members of Congress during the program.

DESCRIPTION:https://kclibrary.org/events/kmbc-9-chronicle-women-who-served \nKMBC 9 Anchor Donna Pitman moderates a discussion between former U.S. Army First Lieutenant Lou Eisenbrandt and retired Army Captain Hugh Mills about the overlooked roles women played in the Vietnam War. \nMore than 11\,000 American women served in the armed forces during the war in Vietnam. The majority were volunteer nurses who saved countless American and Vietnamese lives. Upon returning home\, like all servicemembers of the era\, they faced hostile and hateful attitudes. \nToday\, the women — and their work — are still under-recognized. \nEisenbrandt\, who lives in Leawood\, joined the Army in 1968 at 21 years old. She kept a detailed journal of her time in Vietnam and later wrote Vietnam Nurse: Mending and Remembering. In 2002\, she was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease due to exposure to Agent Orange. She continues to speak about other female veterans and their experiences to raise awareness about their work and keep them from being forgotten. \nMills served 26 years as a combat veteran and did three tours in Vietnam. Among other honors and awards\, he’s a member of the Army Aviation Hall of Fame\, has three Silver Stars\, three Purple Hearts\, and six Distinguished Flying Crosses. \nPitman shares clips from KMBC 9 Chronicle: To the Women who Served.

We’ll start by talking about the types of disrespect that Muslims and those who are perceived to be Muslim are facing right now —  from microaggressions to violence —  using a tool we call the “spectrum of disrespect.”  \nYou’ll learn what to look for and the positive impact that bystander intervention has on individuals and communities. We’ll talk through five strategies for intervention: distract\, delegate\, document\, delay\, and direct; and how to prioritize your own safety while intervening. We’ll have time at the end for practice\, and you’ll leave feeling more confident intervening the next time you see Islamophobic and Xenophobic harassment online or in person.
