PVKS: Juneteenth Freedom Celebration

June 19 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm CDT

This year’s celebration is designed as a family reunion–style gathering—a time to come together in community, connection, and joy. This is a free event, and all are welcome! Dinner will be catered by Holy Smoke BBQ and served beginning at 6:30 p.m. Meals are first-come, first-served while supplies last. Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the end of slavery in the United States. Originating in Galveston, Texas in 1865, the observance of June 19—also known as Emancipation Day—has grown into a powerful national celebration of freedom, history, and hope. The event will feature live music from James Ward Trio from 6-7 p.m. and Kansas City Latin Jazz Orchestra from 7-8 p.m. A new educational component that will be introduced this year is the Prairie Village History Walk. Pop-up signage along the sidewalk will share the history of Prairie Village and highlight community developments since the death of George Floyd. The event is sponsored by the City of Prairie Village, STAND Up for Black Lives+ PV, Prairie Village Diversity Committee, NAACP Johnson County and Village Church. At at Harmon Park Pavilion near W. 77th Place and Delmar Street, Prairie Village, KS.
